Melodic minor modes – Aeolian b5

Continuing my look at Melodic Minor modes this post covers mode 6, Aeolian b5. This mode is also known as the Locrian ♮2 (or ♮9).

Scale formula

The formula for the Aeolian b5 scale is:

R - 2 - b3 - 4 - b5 - b6 - b7

Position 1 Aeolian b5 scale.

Chords

  • min7b5
  • min7b5♮9

Possible extensions/tensions: 9, 11, b13

You can make a min7b5♮9 chord by taking a standard min7b5 chord and dropping the b3 a semitone.
