Harmonic minor modes – Lydian #2

The sixth mode of Harmonic Minor is known as Lydian #2. This mode is bright and ethereal like Lydian, but with an unusual, almost Middle Eastern colour due to the #2.

Scale formula

The formula for the Ionian #5 mode is:

 1 - #2 - 3 - #4 - 5 - 6 - 7

Lydian #2 fingering.

Chords

  • Maj7

Since Lydian #2 is built on the 6th degree of the Harmonic Minor Scale, it works best over maj7 chords that support altered extensions.

Usage

The Lydian #2 mode is a unique and highly expressive scale derived from the Harmonic Minor Scale. It takes the bright, floating sound of the Lydian mode and makes it more exotic by raising the 2nd degree. This gives it a mystical, ethereal, and sometimes eerie character, making it popular in fusion, jazz, progressive rock, film scoring, and avant-garde music.

Lydian #2 is often used in modern jazz over maj7 chords with altered tensions.

In progressive rock & film scoring Lydian #2 is quite common as it creates a mysterious, floating sound. Bands like King Crimson and Yes often use Lydian-based harmonies.

The #2 makes Lydian #2 ideal for fantasy and sci-fi music. Hans Zimmer or Vangelis might use it for a magical, otherworldly cue.
